High Frontier

Two of my current favorite games are from smaller game publishers. High Frontier is one of those games. I don't know what it is, maybe my engineering background or interest in Sci-Fi and science in general but the game just fascinates me. I bought the game and expansion at BGG Con 2010 just based on the few things I had read about it on BGG.

After playing the game a few times I wanted to contribute so I downloaded the VASSAL module for it on the High Frontier Yahoo Group and added to it. Hopefully my additions helped to make the module better.

I recently purchased the new expanded map that includes the remaining planets in the solar system. I haven't had the chance to play on it yet but am looking forward to it.

2011 Gaming So Far

Man, I haven't posted here for a while. I have been playing games really I have and to prove it here are some slideshows of game days we've had this year.

MAR 26 Game Day

Games played at Madness Games & Comics

A few weeks ago on March 26. We had a game day at Madness Games & Comics in Plano, TX.
It was a good turn out for the game group, ~23 people showed up for gaming.

I played a 4-player game of Friedrich (as Prussia) and Russia managed to win during Turn 13.

We then played a 4-player game of Battle for Baghdad and the US player won by satisfying
his special victory conditions.

I like both of these games but thought Battle for Baghdad dragged a little longer than I would have liked. It may
have been because I had brain burn from playing Prussia in Friedrich!

Sept 25, 2010 Frisco Library Game Day

It has been a while since posting but here is quick run down of what we played today.

Sixteen gamers braved the inclement weather and showed up at the Frisco Public Library for boardgaming today.

The following games were present:
Fall Blau - Greg Blanchett's playtest

Command and Colors: Ancients
Sara and Emily Blanchett squared off again for their regular match.

Federation Commander: Klingon Border
Doug Erwin brought his minis and played with Marc Greenspan on Doug's nice looking Hotts Space Map.

Beda Fomm
Brian Marrs(British) vs Steven Sheasby(Italians)

Age of Conan - 4 player game
Mark Bausman
Mark Woodson
Jenny Ramsey
David Harrod

Battle for Baghdad - 5 player game
Mervyn Dejecacion - USA (winner)
John Boone - Shi'ite
Greg Turner - Sunni
Kent Wayne - New Iraqi Government
Steve Gallob - Jihadists

Battle for Baghdad was a wild game and lots of fun. The guys who played it want to play it again.

A lot of things happening since my last post. We were meeting twice a month, at the Frisco Public Library and The Gamers Realm, until The Gamers Realm shut down. The library game group has grown quite a bit and we have been averaging 20+ gamers showing up for a library game day.

Game Day at The Gamer's Realm - 3/27/2010

Mervyn D, Andy L, and Greg T around the table for Conquest of Paradise. Mervyn and I had not played the game since Jan 2008. This was a really fun game - we should get this one to the table more often.

After finishing our Conquest of Paradise game, Nevin Ball, Mervyn D, and I played Runewars. This is one of my current favorites.

In the other room, Mark Woodson, Tom H, Ken Burt, and Mark Bausman played Twilight Imperium 3. They were still playing when we left.

Game Day at Gamer's Realm 2/27/2010

Our first game day at the new game store The Gamer's Realm in Richardson, TX. John Boone, Matthew Schemenaur, and Mervyn Dejecacion play Runewars.

Late in the game, the Elves are fighting a two front war vs the Matt's Humans and Mervyn's evil Uthuk . The game ended when the Elves managed to acquire 2 Dragon Runes in the same turn for 6 total required for the win.
In the other room, Mark Woodson, Mark Bausman, Andy Linman, and another player whose name I didn't get play Samurai Swords while Ken Burt watches. I heard they had to stop before finishing the game but it sounded like Mark Woodson was winning.
After finishing our Runewars game, Matt and I played his copy of Panzer General. Matt took the US and I the Germans. Matt's Americans ran over my poor Germans and captured my HQ for the win. This is an interesting card base game where the cards represent both your fighting units and the combat actions they take. The action cards and unit cards each have a cost that the player must pay to use the card. The cost is paid from a player's Prestige point track. Prestige points are gained from the territory a player controls, winning battles, and from event cards when played, so the game comes down to who can best manage their card hand and prestige supply to have enough to go on the offensive and yet have enough for the inevitable counter attack.
